HAVE A GO DAY IN MAHON

Have A Go Day in Mahon
Over 120 local children participated in a GAA ‘Have-a-Go-Day’ in Mahon coordinated by John Neville; newly appointed Urban Development Officer for Cork on behalf of Coiste Oiliuna Chorcai.
The National Urban plan has been put in place to encourage children, teenagers and adults who may not be involved with GAA to play Gaelic Games. The overall aim is to get more people playing and involved with local clubs while also tackling health and social issues.
The ‘Have-a-Go’ day was a huge success in Mahon. John Neville would like to thank Holy Cross National School children and teachers for their participation in the recent ‘Have-a-Go-Day’ Football event.
John Neville, a member of the St.Finbarr’s club in Togher is overseeing the Urban scheme-“Similar days are being planned for Mayfield, Knocknaheeney and Ballyphehane in the coming weeks and I hope to see those that took part in Mahon getting involved with local clubs permanently. Societal trends are forever changing in Cork and it is vital that the GAA invite and welcome all new members into their community”.
Other events due to be carried out under the National Urban Plan include Hurling by the Greens, Super-Touch Teenage games, Monster Primary School Blitzes, Go-Games Summer League Programme and GAA Abu – recreational hurling and football games aimed at adults who are not involved with a GAA club.
“GAA Abu is a fantastic idea as it allows those who have an interest in Gaelic Games to participate without the added pressure of performance standards. The games are non-contact and teams are mixed which should create a positive atmosphere. It’s also a great way to keep fit while socialise with fellow exercisers.”
Anyone interested in getting involved with any of the activities mentioned above should contact John at urbancoordinator.cork@gaa.ie or find out more information on Face Book – Cork Urbanisation Project.
